Who we are & how it all began.

Kusaidia Afrika – Helping in Africa – reg. assoc. is a registered non-profit, founded on 23 January 2001 in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany.

Our story

How a letter became a movement.

In 1996 Margit Schnee, together with another young woman, went to Dareda in Tanzania as a missionary on time, for nearly a year, working at a kindergarten run by the Diocese of Mbulu.

She prepared in courses with the Pallottine Fathers, learned Swahili, and absorbed the customs of the country.

Dareda – a community along the East African Rift Valley, without electricity, running water or telephone, but with a hospital run by the Diocese of Mbulu. The hospital's catchment area covers a 30 to 50 km radius and roughly 100,000 inhabitants. A stark contrast to life in Germany.

After three weeks the first sign of life arrived – and shortly afterwards a letter describing the situation in the community and hospital: the simplest supplies were missing.

"Through the Zum Guten Hirten parish in Bissingen, we collected donations. Rolf and Ulrike Schnee – Margit's parents – visited Dareda in summer 1997. They bought materials for the hospital, bicycles for the catechists and benches for the primary school with the funds."

The visit gave rise to many lasting contacts. Even before the association was founded, a doctor from Dareda came to Bietigheim-Bissingen and trained for three months at the local hospital.

On 23 January 2001 the association Kusaidia Afrika – Helping in Africa – reg. assoc. was founded.

An intensive cooperation with the Diocese of Mbulu began. More doctors from Dareda came to train in Bietigheim, a Bietigheim doctor spent two months working in Dareda, and nursing staff exchanged between the two hospitals.
